AARP Leadership Profile

Nancy A. LeaMond

Executive Vice President, State and National Group

Nancy LeaMond, executive vice president of AARP's State and National Group, leads government relations, advocacy and public education for AARP's social change agenda. LeaMond also has responsibility for AARP's state operation, which includes offices in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

During her time at AARP, LeaMond has led two of the association's major campaigns: Health Action Now — AARP's effort to ensure that federal health care reform included important benefits for Americans 50 and older — and Divided We Fail — AARP's national initiative with the Business Roundtable, Service Employees International Union and National Federation of Independent Business to put health care and financial security at the top of the country's agenda. LeaMond began her tenure at AARP in 2001 as director of International Affairs.

During the Clinton administration, LeaMond served as the chief of staff and assistant U.S. trade representative for congressional affairs at the Office of the United States Trade Representative. In these capacities, she successfully managed legislative efforts that helped secure passage of major presidential legislative initiatives, including the North American Free Trade Agreement, the Uruguay Round (GATT) and China MFN. In addition, she oversaw public affairs for trade agreements with Jordan and China, as well as the 1999 negotiations of the World Trade Organization. She also worked as senior adviser to the Commerce secretary.

LeaMond worked extensively on health care and pension issues before entering the trade field, beginning her career in the Public Health Service, the Medicaid program and the Department of Commerce. She served in the Office of Management and Budget, the Department of Education and later on Capitol Hill as chief of staff to a senior member of Congress in the Democratic leadership.

In addition, for five years LeaMond was president of the Congressional Economic Leadership Institute, a nonprofit and nonpartisan forum for education and dialogue with members of Congress on economic competitiveness and trade issues.

LeaMond holds a bachelor's degree from Smith College and a master's degree in public policy and urban planning from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She is a former trustee of Smith College and serves on the Board of the International Women's Forum of Washington, D.C. She is a member of the Dean's Advisory Leadership Council at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, the Academy of Nursing's Raise the Voice Advisory Council and the KB Home National Advisory Board on home and community development.
